Can you get a temporary TV Licence?

You cannot buy a temporary TV Licence lasting under 12 months. Please buy a TV Licence, which covers you for a year. Then, if you no longer need it, you can cancel it and get a refund for any unused months.

For example, if you need a short-term TV Licence for one month, you can buy one that covers you for a year and then apply for a refund for the 11 months that are unused.

Do I need my own TV Licence in temporary accommodation?

You'll need your own TV Licence when living in temporary accommodation that:

  • is self-contained, such as a separate flat or annex
  • has a separate tenancy agreement for your room

If you are unsure whether this applies to you please contact us to find out more information.

When don't I need a TV Licence in temporary accommodation?

In most temporary accommodation, you will be covered by the TV Licence registered to the accommodation. This is the case for:

  • hotels
  • hostels
  • mobile units
  • holiday lets
  • campsites

A TV Licence in these accommodations will cover staff and customers.
