Schools and colleges

Your TV Licence lets your staff and pupils enjoy a huge range of TV. It covers you for:

  • All TV channels, like BBC, ITV, Channel 4, U&Dave and international channels
  • Pay TV services, like Sky, Virgin Media and EE TV
  • Live TV on streaming services, like YouTube and Amazon Prime Video
  • Everything on BBC iPlayer.

This includes recording and downloading. On any device.

Find out more about what your TV Licence covers.

Usually one TV Licence will cover the entire school or college. However, in some cases certain areas need a separate TV Licence. Please check below to ensure your school is correctly licensed.

A single TV Licence will cover

All TV receiving equipment from a single educational establishment being used at all sites within the same town and under the control of the same senior official.

If you’re sure you don’t need a licence, please let us know.

A single TV Licence won’t cover

Residential accommodation within your premises

For example, students living in halls of residence and live-in staff.

Welfare or social clubs

If these are on the school/college premises, and are run independently of the school/college.

Other businesses or organisations

If the premises are sublet by the school/college.

Do schools and colleges need an ERA licence if they have a TV Licence?

An ERA licence is required for schools and colleges to make recordings of TV and radio programmes for educational use. This is separate from a TV Licence, and a TV Licence will not enable you to do this.

An ERA licence does not enable you to watch live TV or use BBC iPlayer - you will need a TV Licence for this.
