Important update to our refund policy from 1 April 2017

If you no longer use TV receiving equipment or you’re covered by another licence, our standard policy is to consider refund requests for each complete month left on your TV Licence. This will apply if:

  • You bought or renewed your licence on or after 1 April 2017
    or
  • Your licence is active (i.e. you haven’t cancelled it) when you make the refund request
    or
  • You cancelled the licence before requesting a refund, but its expiry date is on or after 1 April 2017 (if you haven’t paid for your licence in full, its expiry date may be changed to reflect what you’ve already paid)

If you do not meet at least one of the above criteria, any refund due will continue to be given in blocks of three complete months.

How can I find out more?

Please read our policy statement, which describes the changes in detail. Or find out more about how we work out refunds.

Why is this happening?

We have made this change to simplify our policy, and make refunds fairer and easier to understand. We agreed this with the Government as part of the BBC Charter Renewal White Paper in 2016.

How do I ask for a refund?

You can request a refund online by filling in a short form. We may ask you to supply evidence that supports your claim.
