TV Licensing

• All TV channels, like BBC, ITV, Channel 4, U&Dave and international channels
• Pay TV services, like Sky, Virgin Media and EE TV
• Live TV on streaming services, like YouTube and Amazon Prime Video
• Everything on BBC iPlayer.

This includes recording and downloading. On any device.

You can watch TV in lots of different ways:

On a TV

On a mobile phone or a tablet (like an iPad or a Samsung Galaxy)

Using a Blu-ray, DVD or video recorder

On a computer or laptop

Using a digital box with your TV (like Sky or Virgin)

With a games console (like a PlayStation or Xbox)

A standard TV Licence costs £169.50

You could:

• get a free TV Licence if you are aged 75 or over and receive Pension Credit
• get a half-price licence if you are blind (severely sight impaired)
• pay less for a TV Licence if you live in a care home or supported housing

You don’t need a TV Licence if:

• you don't watch on any TV channel, like BBC, ITV, Channel 4, U&Dave and international channels
AND
• you don't watch TV on a pay TV service, like Sky, Virgin Media and EE TV
AND
• you don't watch live TV on streaming services, like YouTube and Amazon Prime Video
AND
• you don't use BBC iPlayer.

This includes recording and downloading. On any device.

You also don’t need a TV Licence if your home is empty and no one is living there.

We may need to send a TV Licensing Officer to your home, to check if you need a licence or not.

If you do not get a TV Licence when you need one, you will be breaking the law. This means you could have to go to court and you might get a fine. The fine could be up to £1,000. In Guernsey, the fine can be up to £2,000.
