Definitions of ‘accommodation unit’, and ‘mobile unit’ and ‘site’

Accommodation units

This is a room, caravan, tent or moveable dwelling. The majority of accommodation offered must be for less than 28 consecutive nights.

If the majority of accommodation you offer is for guests who stay longer than 28 consecutive nights, you may still qualify for a reduced fee licence as a provider of mobile units (see below).

Mobile units

This is overnight accommodation that can move easily from one location to another. It doesn't matter how long your guests stay for. Each mobile unit needs to be provided to guests by the same person and operated from the same place.

Usually a mobile unit has:

  • Its own wheels or wheels that can be easily attached
  • A motor, or a motor that can be easily attached

Sites

If a public road, highway or railway divides your premises, this creates two or more separate sites. You need a separate licence for each site. Buildings on the same premises, but under separate ownership, also need separate licences.

Refunds for hotel licences

A refund is available if it has been purchased in error or if the hotel is closing down. The licence must not be needed again during the licence period and refunds will be paid for unused months.

To apply for a refund please write to:

Hotels and Company Group Licensing Department

Darlington
DL98 1TL

Please use your hotel headed paper and include relevant evidence of the hotel's closure, such as a bill of sale or final utility bill.

Do I need a TV Licence for an Airbnb?

If your Airbnb address is covered by a TV Licence, your guests can enjoy live or recorded TV from channels like BBC, ITV, streaming services such as YouTube and Amazon Prime, and downloads from BBC iPlayer.

Your guests may be covered by their own licence while staying in an Airbnb if they use devices that do not get connected to mains power.
